So you never took a course on memorizing where all the books of the Bible are located? Neither did I.
Here are some quick ways to navigate the Bible. If you don’t have a Bible yet, you may want to look at some Bibles.
(Keep in mind every Bible is a little different so you may have to practice some of these tips a few times in your own Bible to find books quickly.
Quickly Finding Genesis and Revelation
Let’s start with 2 easy ones. Find Genesis, the first book in the Bible and Revelation, the last book. If your Bible has a table of contents and a lot of commentaries, you may have to flip through some pages to find them, but it is worth getting familiar with your Bible.
Quickly Finding Psalms
Let’s try another one. Start by holding up your bible edgewise with the cover to your left so you can see the edges of all the pages (and be able to open it anywhere you want). Try to pick the halfway point of your bible and open it. See if you are in or near Psalms. If not, flip through pages looking at the title of the book at the top of the page until it changes. Job and Proverbs are around Psalms.
After you have found Psalms, close your Bible and repeat until you can find Psalms in a few seconds. If you can do that, congratulations as you just unlocked the key to finding a book in the Bible!
Quickly Finding
(Matthew) in the New Testament
Here is another one. You may hear the terms Old Testament (OT) or New Testament (NT). If you think they are 2 different books, you are not the first to think that. They are 2 major sections of the Bible, the OT being from the beginning of creation up to Jesus while the NT being Jesus and the Early Church.
To find the point between the OT and NT, hold up your Bible and imagine it in 5 even sections and opening to the last one. (If that is difficult to imagine, then you can also do it this way… Split the Bible in half and take the right half. Then split that in half and take the right half again. That gives you the last quarter. See if you are close to the beginning of the New Testament. The New Testament begins with the 4 Gospels (Matthew Mark Luke and John followed by Acts of the Apostles and Paul’s letters.)
If you don’t see any of those names, then you may be near the end of the Old Testament near Malachi, Zechariah, Haggai or one of the other prophets). Try to find Matthew. That is where the NT begins.
Once you have found Matthew, close your Bible and try again. This may take some practice but if you can repeatedly find the New Testament in a few seconds, congratulations as that is one of the most frequent searches you will do!
Now when you start hearing references to books, chapters, and verses. you have some basics to start locating books more quickly.
